9 Essential Jackets You Need To Have In Your Closet

Posted by Judy Burks on

Cold weather is finally starting to stick here in Texas (maybe?), and we are all excited about it. Colder weather means one thing: JACKETS!  Short jackets or long ones, light cover-ups, or heavier coats, we are here for all of them.  But with so many types out there, how do you know which jackets you need to have?

Texas weather has a way of always flipping on us when we least expect it. It is essential, then, for your closet to be stocked like a military-grade arsenal of personal preparedness for the cold.  Easily, your greatest (and most fun!) wintry weapons of defense are jackets. The weather will inevitably change this fall and winter when you might not expect it. But with our help, at least you can be prepared for it.

Here are 9 essential jackets you need to have in your closet this fall and winter.

  1. Denim jacket
  2. Bomber jacket
  3. Leather/suede jacket
  4. Blazer
  5. Puffer coat
  6. Wool duster coat/wrap
  7. Trench coat
  8. Fluffy faux fur/statement coat
  9. Raincoat

Let’s take a closer look at why these jackets are essential.

1. Denim jacket

The “little black dress” of jackets, an essential jacket every girl needs to have in her closet is denim. It is a versatile and stylish layering item and finishing touch to countless looks. Tied around your waist or worn to block a chill, this highly functional jacket is a go-to you must have.

The fabric is durable, easy-to-maintain, and affordable, so there’s no need to break your pocketbook with this one. Wear your denim jacket over all black with heels for a classy look. Or if you’re going casual, you can even pair your little denim jacket with that little black dress.

2. Bomber jacket

In your arsenal of jackets for fall and winter, the bomber jacket is the actual ‘bomb’. Drop it into any casual outfit with intense impact. Going to the grocery store and don’t want to get out of your leggings? Bomber jacket. Got a long travel day ahead and need to be comfortable and layered, but still look chic and put-together? Bomber jacket. This is definitely one of the jackets you need to have in your closet to add a little boom to your wintry wardrobe.

3. Leather/suede jacket

Toughen up against the cold with a leather or suede jacket. Bring a little edginess to your ensemble and some fierceness to the frigid Fahrenheits. Whether black or neutral, loose or more fitted, you need you to have a leather or suede jacket in your closet.

4. Blazer

Blazers are classy and timeless. Whether they are short and tailored or mid-length and less structured, blazers bring a certain sophistication to any look. And that makes it one of the essential jackets you need to have in your closet. You don’t have to go full-on Melanie Griffith from “Working Girl” with ALL the buttons and shoulder pads. But also YOU CAN!

5. Puffer coat

Puffer coats put the FUN in functional. Various materials, lengths, and styles make these coats super versatile. There is a puffer coat for all your needs, from short and light to long and warm to full-on winter. It will add warmth to your day and depth to your ensemble. And that makes it one of the essential jackets you need to have in your wardrobe.

6. Wool duster coat/wrap

A wool duster coat or wrap coat adds an outer layer of sophistication to your wardrobe and outfit. Thrown on overtop skinny jeans and heels or wrapped around a dress, this coat will add an updated elegance to your look. Whether black, grey, or tan you need to have at least one. Dusters are one of the jackets you need to have in your closet that you will want to find an excuse to wear all the time.

7. Trench coat

Whether you are walking the hectic streets of NYC and London or just strolling the friendlier ones of Conroe, TX, you need a trench coat. Trench coats are timeless, practical gems, and one of the jackets you need in your closet. Their versatility makes them the ultimate outer layer of warmth and professional style, and can be worn over almost anything. Depending on the size, style, and material, a trench coat can run a little pricier than other coats. But because of all it does for you, this one is definitely worth the investment.

8. Fluffy faux fur/statement coat

This is your wild card. Your expression. Your statement piece. And at least one of the jackets you need to have in your closet. Beyonce shouldn’t be the only girl who gets to make a statement and look fabulous. Find the fuzziest, fluffiest faux fur coat with a pattern or color that matches your style, and literally go to town. Express that confidence you feel while you take on the day, and look fabulous while doing it.

9. Raincoat/raincape

Don’t forget about raincoats and raincapes! If you live in a climate with routinely inclement weather, a raincoat/raincape is one of the essential jackets you need to have in your closet. But in any case, it’s good to have one on hand when the atmosphere wants to surprise you. Don’t be caught off-guard. Make sure you already have a raincoat/raincape in your closet that makes you look and feel great (and dry!).
